Research Projects
Grassian Group members are involved in several projects related to environmental interfaces, atmospheric aerosols, and environmental and health applications and implications of nanoscience and nanotechnology. Details of these various research projects are provided below.
Heterogeneous Chemistry, Photochemistry and Optical Properties of Particles in the Atmosphere: From Fundamental Molecular Processes to Global Impacts
- Heterogeneous atmospheric chemistry and photochemistry of mineral dust and its components – oxides, carbonates and clays
- Mineral dust and its impact on global process including climate and ocean biogeochemical cycles – the role of chemistry
- FTIR extinction spectroscopy of mineral dust aerosol and brown carbon– Mie calculation versus experimental spectra and implications for remote sensing data
- Surface science of environmental interfaces (oxides and carbonates)
- Heterogeneous atmospheric chemistry of metal-containing anthropogenic dusts – fly ash to engineered nanomaterials
- Sea spray aerosol - in collaboration with UC-San Diego and other university partners in the CAICE (Center for Aerosol Impacts on Climate and the Environment)
Applications and Implications of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology in Environmental Processes and Human Health
- Environmental remediation, sesquestration and decontamination with nanomaterials (e.g. carbon dioxide storage and conversion)
- Nanoparticle Fe as a reactive constituent in air, water and soil
- Impact of manufactured nanomaterials (metals and metal oxides) on the environment
- Impact of manufactured nanomaterials (metals and metal oxides) on human health (nanotoxicity)
