Thank you for your interest in the Graduate Program at the University of Iowa Department of Chemistry. The University of Iowa, located in the culturally and geographically diverse community of Iowa City (with an approximate population of 75,000), was founded in 1847 and is Iowa's oldest academic institution. The Department has had a chemistry Ph.D. program for over 75 years and currently consists of 28 faculty, more than 100 graduate students and over 25 post-doctoral associates. We are aggressively adding new faculty members as we seek to increase the size and activity of our department. State-of-the-art research laboratories, support facilities and classrooms are located in the Chemistry Building and the new Iowa Advanced Technology Laboratory situated along the Iowa River. Extensive resources are readily accessible such as NMR, mass spectrometry, and X-ray analysis facilities, advanced computational resources, and complete machine, electronics, and glass shops. In addition to strong programs in the core areas of analytical, inorganic, organic and physical chemistry, we offer unique research opportunities in emerging interdisciplinary areas such as biocatalysis, natural products, materials, surface science, bioinorganic, chemical sensors, environmental and atmospheric chemistry and others. The quality of our research and teaching program is critically dependent on the quality of our graduate students and the Department is committed to providing students with an excellent educational experience. Financial support from a variety of sources is available to help students achieve their goals. As a consequence, our graduates and post-doctoral associates have accepted positions at leading academic and industrial institutions and national laboratories. We invite interested and motivated students to learn more about our Department from these web pages or contacting us directly to obtain further information.
