Iowa City, which surrounds the University of Iowa campus, has a multitude of book stores, cafes,
pubs, restaurants, record shops, open air markets, and movie theatres. The city is alive with festivals
and celebrations year round where music, drama, art, and dance can be found in front of shops and on
street corners. In the summer, several art and music festivals and weekly outdoor concerts bring crowds
to the downtown pedestrian mall. The new outdoor theater in City Park hosts a popular Shakespeare festival
in the spring.
Iowa City and the University take pride in the diverse range of recreational activities that they offer.
Indeed, the University can help put enthusiasts on cross-country skis or in a sailboat. Tennis, fencing,
martial arts, handball, soccer, rugby, football, horseback riding, gymnastics, golf, and softball are just
some of the activities available within the local area. The University's Macbride Nature Recreation Area,
just 15 miles from campus, offers hiking, cross-country skiing, sailing, and canoeing. The University
fields 11 varsity teams each for men and women as a member of the Big Ten Athletic Conference, all of which
enjoy strong fan support from the community and a large region of the state.
Hancher Auditorium attracts the world's finest musicians, dancers, actors,
and entertainers to the University and the Iowa City area. It is part
of Arts Iowa, which includes the Museum of Art, and sponsors
diverse programs in music, theater, art and art history,
dance, and literary arts.
In terms of transportation, the Eastern Iowa Airport, served by national and regional airlines, is a
