In the fall of 2000, the American Chemical Society declared that "Scholarship in the chemical sciences includes the integration, application, and teaching of chemical principles and practices and requires originality, creativity, a thorough grounding in previous accomplishments of other scholars, and effective communication of new contributions in peer-reviewed publications."

The area of chemical education involves the development of materials and pedagogical practices and the outcomes from their implementation in college-level teaching and learning. Faculty are involved in two ways:

  • As teachers who are intimately involved in the instruction of undergraduate and graduate students.
  • As practitioners of chemistry education research who apply the principles of the scientific method to problems pr questions related to teaching and learning.
