Research in the Mason Group is carried out as computational and theoretical
investigations.
We work to extract information from atomistic modeling to form new conceptual and predictive understanding about surface & interface reactivity.

NEWS:

  • January 2012: Graduate Student Katie Witkin starts work in the Group.

  • November 2011: "DFT Study of Sb(III) and Sb(V) Adsorption and Heterogeneous Oxidation on Hydrated Oxide Surfaces" (by Mason, Trainor, and Goffinet) is accepted as an (invited) article to a special "Modeling in Materials Chemistry" issue of Computational and Theoretical Chemistry.

  • October 2011: SEM presents "Comparative DFT studies for molecular-level understanding of environmental interface reactivity" as an invited contribution to the Stanford Center for Computational Earth and Environmental Science Seminar Series on Computational Geosciences.

  • September 2011: SEM is appointed as the (3-year term) chair for the ACS Division of Colloid and Surface Chemistry continuing symposium "Interfacial Chemistry and the Environment."

  • August 2011: SEM and Sarah Petitto co-organize and co-preside over the COLL Symposium "Reactive Properties of Environmental Interfaces" at the ACS National Meeting in Denver, CO. Also, SEM gives a talk and represents group research with 2 posters at the meeting.

  • August 2011: SEM is invited to submit a manuscript to the 'Emerging Investigators' special issue of the Journal of Environmental Monitoring.

    Some Random Shots:

8/2011: ACS symposium co-organizers Sara Mason and Sarah Petitto, dubbed "The Sara(h)'s" by our speakers, pose in front of the session board at the Denver Convention Center.

8/2011: Dr. Valentino Cooper (fellow Rappe Group alum., currently Research Staff at Oak Ridge Nat'l Lab.) and SEM at the ACS meeting. Sometimes a picture really is worth 1,000 words!
