Undergraduate Awards
Eric (Namhoon) Lee, an undergrad who has been working in the Larsen lab for a couple of years, has been awarded the American Institute of Chemists Award and the Russell K. Simms Scholarship by the department of chemistry here at The University of Iowa.
Congratulations Anton
Congratulations to Anton Petushkov in passing his comprehensive examination on 4-28-08.
Congrats Ram!
Congratulations to Ramasubramanian Kanthasamy on successfully defending his Ph.D.dissertation on 4-21-08. Dr. Kanthasamy will soon be moving onto a postdoc position at the University of Pittsburgh working in the lab of Dr. Megan Spence.
Silicalite nanoparticles promote transgene expression.
Work done at the University of Iowa by Aliasger Salem, NNI@UI Executive Committee member, and Sarah Larsen, Associate Director of NNI@UI, has been featured on the site nanotechweb.org. The subject of the research has been the investigation and the utilization of nanoparticles that promote transgene expression induced by non-viral vectors.
Collegiate Scholar Award
Dr. Sarah Larsen has recently been awarded a Collegiate Scholar Award from Linda Maxson, dean of the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Collegiate Scholars each receive discretionary funds to support their teaching and research initiatives. Collegiate Scholar awards are funded by a generous unrestricted gift to the college. The award is granted on the advice of the college's Committee on Faculty Promotion and Tenure. The full press release can be found here.
NSF REU support
Dr. Sarah Larsen has been awarded funds from the National Science Foundation for a Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program, beginning the summer of 2008. Funding is expected to support 8-10 undergrad students to participate in summer research opportunities in nanoscience and nanotechnology. More information can be found at the NNI@UI REU page.
Senior Editor
Recently Sarah Larsen, Associate Director of NNI@UI, was named Senior Editor of the Journal of Physical Chemistry, published by the American Chemical Society.
Congratulations
Congratulations to Beth (Elizabeth Michael-Smith) on graduating with a masters from the University of Iowa. The Larsen lab will miss her upbeat attitude and sunny disposition. We wish her all the best for the future.
Welcome New Group Members
The Larsen lab would like to welcome its newest members for the year 2008. The lab is growing quickly with the additions of Kevin Watson, Ashish Datt and Melissa Torres as new graduate students. This semester will also see the addition of three new undergraduate researchers as well: Tom Santacroce, Shebere Adam and Suhyoung Yoon. 2008 looks like it will be a good year for research here in the lab! Further updates to the "Members" page will be forthcoming so you can all learn more about the newcomers.
Saturday Scholars
Dr. Larsen is going to present a talk to the general public entitled Nanotechnology: Solving Big Problems with Small Science on September 29th in room 40 of Schaeffer Hall on the Pentacrest at 10:00 AM. This lecture is part of the Saturday Scholars seminar series.
NNI@UI Symposium
On September 27th there will be the fall 2007 symposium of the Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Institute at the University of Iowa entitled Bridging the River through Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. The symposium starts at 1:00 PM with opening remarks by Richard Hichwaand Vicki H. Grassian. More information can be found at the NNI@UI website.
